According to Burke, individuals act by using language that is purposeful and that conveys our attitudes. From this understanding, Burke draws his definition of rhetoric as the use of words by human agents to form attitudes or induce actions in other human agents. It is the associating process, whereby individuals persuade others, or themselves, that they share important qualities in common. One example of this concept can be seen in the recent presidential elections where John McCain continuous uses of the phase “My Good Friend.” On December 24, 1941, Roosevelt and Churchill delivered Christmas greetings to the nation and the world. FDR closed his short message with the following passage, “and so I am asking my associate, and my old and good friend, to say a word to the people of America, old and young, tonight, Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain.” This speech described the relationship that the two leaders of the free world had struck and is an example of what Burke describes as identification. John McCain attempted to make this same connection during his bid for the presidency with the American public. In almost every public address McCain would use the phrase, “My Good Friend” in attempts to identify himself with the people of the United States and is an example of Burkes’ explanation of identification as a process that is fundamental to being human and to communicating. Burke claims that the need to identify arises out of division; humans are born and exist as biologically separate beings and therefore seek to identify, through communication, in order to overcome separateness.

During the 1932 presidential election, the major issue facing the United States was the Great Depression. The Democrats nominated Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) from New York as the Democratic presidential candidate. FDR offered specific proposals to end the depression but more importantly, radiated confidence as he pledged a New Deal for the American people. During the four months between the election and the inauguration the Great Depression worsened: unemployment increased, more businesses failed, and financial system was ailing.

On March 5, 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) gave his first inaugural address to the United States. It was at a time when the county’s confidence was at its lowest point. Roosevelt’s first speech needed to address the concerns of the country.

Analysis of Roosevelt’s inaugural speech to the United States revealed elements of Cicero’s concepts of public speaking. According to Cicero, “invention” refers to an effective approach to a topic in which a speech must be made. The United States suffered a crisis of confidence. Roosevelt’s address needed to exude a sense of vigor and action; this theme ultimately became the approach in which he employed in his first address to American public. The concept of vigor and action is what Cicero would’ve called the focus of Roosevelt’s speech or the invention stage which occurred before the speech was written. Cicero identifies this stage as the most important part of the rhetorical process.

In the third sentence of his speech, Roosevelt’s comments became words of inspiration that have been remembered for many decades. Roosevelt says, “So first of all let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” These opening comments are found in what Cicero identifies as the Exordium. Cicero claimed the exordium brings the mind to a suitable state to receive the rest of the speech and renders the audience well dispose toward the speaker.

The mere fact that Roosevelt was elected President signified the trust and confidence the American people had in his abilities to return the country to solid ground. This trust alone establishes the basis of the honourable cause that Cicero describes as the disposition in which a hearer favours at once, without waiting to hear the speech.

The rest of Roosevelt’s address reinforced his optimism for the future prosperity of the country. For example, FDR stated, “nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it meaning;” we have a country and plenty of resources. “We must act and act quickly.” This is was another exhibition of FDR’s confidence and optimism in the countries ability to overcome adversity. These examples reinforce the good-will that is derived from the hearers themselves according to Cicero.

I agree, the credibly of the author and the message becomes lost in translation if a page is riddled with errors. I admit, writing becomes a personal challenge for me when I must share that which I believe to be coherent thought with others. One of my greatest fears is pressing the send/publish button and releasing to the world words by which another individual may assess a value judgement to your level of intelligence. This is why blogging and IM’ing just isn’t my favorite thing to do. I spend way too much time pouring over words that I have just typed and rereading them to ensure I’m not making a fool of myself. Just like now right now. I just erased what I wrote because it didn’t make much sense to me.

While many of you will finish this post in probably 15 or 20 minutes, I will invest somewhere between 45 to 60 minutes just getting through the initial draft before making my final review for goofs. But, I think it important to do so. In a world where perceptions become reality you never want to send out the wrong message.

The ability to communicate in this world is essential. I have personally seen coworkers send emails or technical reports to engineers and executive managers that were riddled with grammatical errors. As a result of other peoples embarrassing moments, I send a great deal of time trying to avoid their mistakes. I think its worth the time and effort. At the very least, my message will be clear; I hope.

In my own opinion, knowledge acquired through the banking concept may have reached the end of the road. Today’s instructors must be willing to do more than just deposit information. It is my belief that a teacher must share in his or her students learning experience. Not only must the teacher present and explain the text, but he or she must be capable of identifying and analyzing all the possible ways a student may misunderstand the given information. This will help the instructor resolve inconsistencies between that which is taught and that which is understood by the student. Teachers who not only present the information but travel down the road of knowledge with the students, in the passenger seat, ultimately share in the students overall learning experience. Dissemination of information with simple explanations is not enough, the risk of failure must be shared by both parties; student and instructor. Why? because when a student successfully completes a course the implication is that both student and instructor were successful. However, when a student fails to meet the requirements of a class it is usually presumed that he or she did not put forth the required effort. Thus, the responsibility for failing is bore by only the student; not the professor. Today, teachers must be capable of sharing in their students learning experience. Thus, learning becomes dual purpose; a continuous improvement of the education process and value added for both professor and student.

Today a number of professions have instructor trainers directly responsible for filling employer vacancies. For example, in the Airline industry, instructors are directly responsible for initial and reoccurring training of pilots. Eventually, the instructors resume their normal duties and will fly with pilots that they were once responsible for training. Now the instructor must ask the question, how well did I train this person? It is at this point that a full implication of ones own teaching skills become glaringly apparent; at thirty-two thousand feet. The same can be said for peace officers, firefighters, and military personnel. Many instructors in the these professions eventually wind up working side-by-side with the students they were once responsible for training and certifying. For these instructors accountability comes full circle.

In the movie Children of Men, world division, chaos, and anarchy are continuous themes. Britain has become a society of the “evil man;” human life and its moral self eroding into extinction becomes consistent with the evils of man that Tzu refers to. The government has turned aggressive in order to stifle civil unrest and terrorism. Soldiers are rounding up the refugees who are running to the West to the safety of England. The police abuse their prisoners, cram them into cages, and ship them out of the city.

Theo’s numerous displays of altruism earn him the badge of honor. The opening scenes depict him as a man medicated to his surroundings which led me to believe that he was pretty self absorbed or immune to what was going around him. This middle aged activist who reluctantly becomes involved in a war of an underground revolt and seeks the help from Jasper Palmer, an aging hippie, to help the first pregnant woman in eighteen years, reach the safe haven of the Human Project. In the end, Theo rises to become a ray of hope for the future of humanity. This realization, a need for hope beyond ourselves, is an example of the altruistic man that Menius claims to exist.

The views and examples that Rousseau offer are profound with respect to the maturation process of children. As a parent, from a ideological prospective we want raise our children to think both freely and logically. How can we successfully accomplish this enormous feat without invoking our own acquired biases and prejudices? From the day a child is born we create a world of security that in essence restricts their ability to think freely. Rousseau states, ” the only habits the child should be allowed to contract is that of having no habits.” The process of parenting in itself restricts the child’s ability to exercise free will and thought. In the inital days after birth parents try to establish some form of consistent feeding and sleeping patterns. This inevitably establishes a child’s first habit that creates a frame work for what is preconceived cognitive thought. At this point a new born is already receiving negative responses to free will patterns of thought. What Rousseau purposes is very idealistic however unlikely in real world application. The world in which Rousseau might envision is free of ignorance, racism, and hatred; that world does not exist today. As a parent its difficult allowing a child to experience the bad things of nature as Rousseau suggested; one that is against a parents nature. I agree, children should be allowed to exhibit some form of free will. This will help in the development of cognitive thought. However, a parent should actively reinforce those traditional values of life that ultimately enables the child to assimilate into society. I agree to a certain point that a child should be allowed to experience that which is true and natural whether good or bad. Ultimately, a child’s welfare should be the overruling factor in all of life’s lessons.

I believe Kurt is on to something. How is it that we have at our immediate disposal a vast amount of information but continue to make the poor decisions. Our elected officials seem to be living in a black hole. It appears that Plato was correct in saying that once the educated have arrived at good they should then return to their humbled beginnings to be “instruments” of the state. This is kind of like that old saying, ” never forget were you come.” Those who cling on to this concept manage to remember the real struggles of life and often make decisions for the masses rather than focusing on selected groups. I believe this to be the scenario in which the country is presented with today. Will our next President understand the needs of the masses or will he identify only with one specific class? According to Kurt we already have our answer; the next President will be ???????????, that’s right; another guesser. As Kurt has so eloquently put it; if you are educated and a thinker you will NOT be welcomed in Washington. Hold on to your pocketbooks were getting ready to paper the town with more blank checks

Wow, how does one make an argument for female genital mutilation! I’m still in complete disbelief that this practice is in actual existence. I first became aware of this social norm through a class on human sexuality. Apparently, this is a practice for social reasons (preservation of virginity) and religious requirements that is prevalent among the Muslim faith. The ritual identifies a females right of passage for marriage because it symbolizes social control of their sexual pleasure.

From a humanistic perspective one might argue that genital mutilation is an act violence against women and a form of socialized oppression. The women are subjected to a ritual that in many cases are performed under less than sanitary conditions. The physical aspect of this ritual in itself is a form of torture because of the cutting and stitching that takes place in the genital region. Any sane and logical individual can certainly argue that the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment should be afforded to all persons. Muslim cultures justify such practice in the words of the Prophet Mohammed but how can one reasonably justify the preservation of a cultural practice that harms a women’s body and has no known health benefits. Ultimately, female genital mutilation violates established human rights principles as well as norms and standards that are afforded to every individual worldwide.

I personally identified with Mencius and his prospective that the nature of man is good. In my own personal experience I have had the distinct opportunity to have served in our country’s military. For the benefit of those who have not participated, the military society in itself is a entirely unique style of living. Its governing school of thought might resemble that of Tzu. The military is very structured and has defined expectation levels for its members to ensure proper discipline throughout its ranks. This strict adherence to the uniform code of military justice (UCMJ) could be compared to the ritual principles created by the sages. While the formal military structure resembles a society governed by principles and laws (rituals) the actions of its members could be compared to thoughts and ideas subscribed by Mencius. The virtues Mencius describes as innate are notable traits that commonly appear among those who severe in the military. For example, service members honor customs, courtesies, and traditions which show respect for the military way of life and are the foundation of a formalized society that fosters appropriate behavior. This is similar to the fashioning of man’s benevolence and righteousness that Mencius describes as a feeling of deference to those in authority or elders. The adherence to a higher standard of morality and conduct above that of the masses is symbolic to Mencius’s feelings of commiseration. Mencius explains benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and knowledge as characteristics innate to our human nature. These are the very characteristics that I believe our service members embody today.
